Asleep at the Wheel

I have a flair for the dramatic and this is an example of using internal dialogue to accomplish it. I hope you enjoy this intense experience.

Wha…  What’s happened?  The bridge, where is the bridge? Everything moving so fast, snow, I’m hitting snow, how am I hitting snow?  Oh no!  I’m in the river.  Ice breaking, car sinking, water everywhere!  It’s coming in, it’s coming in!  Can’t stop it.  Have to get out!  Can’t breathe!  Who is that screaming? Stop screaming!  Stop it! Stop it!  Can’t think.  Gotta think…Water’s rising – running out of air – must escape before…

Where’s the door?  No, it won’t open.  Pull the handle, up, up!  Won’t come up.  WHY WON’T IT COME UP?  Okay, okay, something else, think, think.  The window…where’s the button…push…no, pull…won’t work, won’t work!  How do I get out?  Windshield – kick it out.  Doesn’t work!  Not strong enough!   Running out of air!   Have to get out!

Hammer…there it is…cracking, yes, the window is cracking…water rushing in…filling the car…can’t breathe…Oh my God!  Water, so cold!  Can’t move, frozen.  It hurts, it hurts!  Have to get out of here.  Pain-unbearable – knives stabbing everywhere. Arms, like lead, can barely lift them.  Have to move or you’re going to dieDo you hear, YOU’RE GOING TO DIE!

There, yes, yes, finally!  One arm, now the other, force it, force it!  You can do it – you have to do it – or die here – NOW!  You have no choice!  MOVE!  I know it hurts, move anyway.

Don’t give up, almost there.  See – there it is, the surface. It’s right there. Keep going!  Reach for it!  Reach!   Air, air there, you can get some strength– if – you – can –  just – get – to – the – top – of – the – water.

“Nooo!  What’s happening? What is this? Caught on something.  What?  I’m almost there!  Let go, let go, let go!  My skirt, caught, a tree limb.  Can’t get loose!  Can’t get loose!  WAIT! STOP!  Stop this now!  Don’t panic!  Conserve your strength or all is lost.  I’m so close, so close!  God, help me! Help me!  Please, please, help me.  I promise, whatever You want, I’ll do it.  Just help me this one time!  I won’t ask for anything ever again!  PLEASE!  JESUS!

Need air, my lungs- hurt so bad, everything going dark.  Want to breathe!  No, can’t breathe – water!  Pull, pull!  No, no, take it off, get it off.  Loosen it, then you can reach the surface.  Think!  Quickly! Quickly!  Not coming loose – fingers too numb – can’t get button open – zipper’s stuck.  Rip it, rip it!  For God’s sake, do something! Anything!  Someone, help me, PLEASE!  I can’t do it. Help! Help!

If I can just reach…  My hand, it’s out of the water, if I can grab on to…  No, nothing is there, nothing… Someone, please, see my hand…grab it…pull me out!  Pull me out!  NO, no one, nothing, no help!  Lost!  No hope…no hope.  Can’t do it, done, breathe, breathe, stop the pain…

Water – so cold going down – freezing my throat – my lungs.  No!  Stop!  Can’t breathe water.  I’m drowning.  So this is what It’s like to drown…to die.  S-o-o easy.  Fl-o-a-ting.  Everything n-i-c-e – w-a-r-m – c-o-z-y!  Why – was – I – so – afraid?  This – is …

Fantabulous. It was so scary that I thought I was dying.

Thanks Ramarao, I knew you would like it.

That was a pretty cool thought Debra. It could certainly be viewed that way. Thanks for commenting.
